So i've noticed that over the past few weeks i've been losing coolant at a faster rate, however I do not find any of it on the ground underneath the car. I've also checked the flooring and neither side is wet. As well as checking that my oil is not clouded with coolant. The only symptoms i'venoticed is that my windshield will fog up as that car gets to normal temps if its a cooler day and I don't have the windows open, and it takes a long time for my AC to clear it up.

So my only thought is that im losing all my coolant as steam, which seems unlikely to me, but I have no other idea. So here's my 2 questions....

1. Does anyone else have any other ideas on what I should check

2. Does anyone have good, detailed instructions on how to access the heater core on a 1999 C70.

It is pretty much the same for the S70,850 ETC there is a post on there about replacing it.
I would say heater core.

 

thanks tech, So I pulled the dash and finally removed the heater core, and there is no signs of failure....No discoloration on the vanes, no white residue, no green gunk...nothing. Plus the inside of the housing was dry. So I'm guessing that it was the o-rings that failed. I went and bought new o-rings, installed, and re-filled the coolant. And before I re-built the dash, I ran the car for over 15 min and pumped the heat, and no signs of a leak.

But now im having a problem getting the car to burp the air pockets, Is there any trick to this? i've squeezed the hose running to the thermostat and its very easy to squeeze so I think there is air trapped in it. I used to be able to run it for 15 min and it would burp on its own, but now it won't. would it be really bad to drive with it like this and keep more coolant in the trunk for when it does finally burp? I put in almost 1 and half of containers of pre-diluted coolant.

 

Take it for a good drive and it should burp by itself.

 

will it still burp itself if the cap is on the resevoir?

So I did that today tech, and it worked thanks. But my windows are still fogging up. Is it possible the the heatercore is bad, even though there was no dried up coolant residue found on it at all? I also still smell the syrup smell.

 

Maybe it is left over coolant trapped in the heater box.

 

So how long do you think it will take for that to dry out? And if it doesn't dry out, then its probably the heater core, so where would be a good place to buy one cheap, as the dealer quoted me 350 for the part.

It might be the heater core but give it a day or 2.

 

So I waited almost a week, dumping in almost 2 more gallons of coolant, then noticed that my carpets in the rear wells had turned green. So after drying and pulling the dash apart again, I decided to just bite the bullet and put in a new heater core.

I just have one question. It seems that the leaky coolant was coming from the O-rings, and they were brand new. did I install themwrong? I slid them on the to pipes coming from the firewall/engine compartment. Should I have seated them in the heater core inlet/outlets instead?

 

Anyone?
