Immobilizer questions
Hello...i am hoping someone. Here can help me with my confusion regarding the security system on our 1998 volvo c70 ht coupe. The key was lost at the local salvage yard and i refuse to pay 300.00 for a key!!!
I read on one of the other threads on here, that volvo didnt put chips in their keys until 99 and later models... Which I would actually believe since there is no security light illuminating on the dash despite numerous other keys being tried in the ignition....however....there is a relay labeled immobilizer under the hood, there is an immobilizer ring around the lock cylinder exactly like the ones on newer cars, and the manual warns about the newer more difficult to replace keys.....
i have to assume they wouldn't install the equipment without the functionality ...
So here is my question.... Does anyone here know what type of immobilizer is installed on this car? (Meaning like vats, passlock, passkey....etc.) I need this information to help determine which bypass method will be likely to work and/or to evaluate my cars compatibility with bypass module product options.
also does anyone know which function would be interrupted if the immobilizer is engaged? Would it be the fuel or the spark?... Thanks so much in advance!!!

What is the date of manufacture? Does the car have a throttle cable and a distributor cap and spark plug wires - or does it use an electronic throttle module with no visible distributor? If it uses a throttle cable it's a 1998, electronic throttle is a 1999+. If it's a 1998 - I would take your VIN number and proof of ownership to the local dealer and order a new key - they can order one cut from the VIN number. A 1998 takes a key with no chip that does not require programming and it does not cost $300.
