Default Need some advise on Engine Replacement!!

Help with some Advice!

My brother has a 1998 Volvo C70 and it needs an engine replacement. He basically blew it up and the timing belt damaged everything. We live in Peterborough Ontario, and would like to have some advice on what to do!!! Our options are to get the Engine Rebuilt,(if so where is a good place in Toronto) or buy a used engine or buy a crate engine.(is this even possible?) Any help would be great,

How do you know it needs a whole engine? Most of the time it just needs valves when the timing belt goes.

Thanks for your quick reply, That is what happened and I am not very mechanically inclined at all. When the the valves are damaged you have to rebuild the top end correct? what is involved with fixing the valves? How much should I play and where should I get the work done. The reason I mentioned replacing the engine is because a mechanic told me the rebuild would be like 2000 grand and would have to be done my a garage in Toronto. He wanted to replace the engine with a used one. He did not take a look at the car though he was just giving us his opinion.

How many miles were on the timing belt/pulleys when they slipped?

Yeah, the head comes off to check the damage. We usually send them to a machine shop to check and replace valves as needed while they clean it up and make sure there aren't any other problems. It could certainly be around $2000. A used engine is always a gamble and a new one will be much more.

This is an "interference" engine. Repairs to head must be done correctly and head re-instaled correctly ot it will happen immediately when you start it up!

Before you are tyring to replace your engine, I must say that meet the expert auto mechanic person or auto dealer. An auto mechanic person will check your engine and gives a good advice on engine replacement.

I'd track down a good mechanic, shop that has some experience with Volvo repairs and have them give you an idea of the belt replacement, head repair. It's just an estimate as the head could be damaged beyond repair and a replacement used head might be a better option buy you won't know until someone takes the head off and inspects it.

Second would be a used engine. The problem being you have no idea how it was taken care of and unless you were really harsh with your engine the devil you know is usually a better option.
