Default power steering whine

Hi guys

I'm not the most savvy when it comes to car engines.

Just bought a 2006. C70 in great condition with 46k kilometers on clock.
Car is very clean engine etc spotless. Drives beautifully.

I do however notice a small whine or hum from the engine when I'm idling and it disappears when I tur the steering wheel making me think its the power steering.

Its not very loud at all and you can almost not hear it.

But I tries to check the power steering fluid as sugested but for the life of me my manual show the resorvoir cap for what it says are brakes and gearbox which when opened looks like a little white cup inside with no markings for min and Max so very confused how you would check the level of power steering fluid.

Any help appreciated

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I'm sure the manual has the proper instructions for checking the fluid level. Don't be afraid to have the dealer point it out to you and show you how it's done.

If the noise goes away when the wheel is turned, it's likely a noise coming from the serpentine belt idler. When you turn the wheel it puts a little different stress on the belt and causes the noise to go away.

Default many tanks

Took the car 2 places to verify and your explanation of the belt with idler pulley seems to be spot on. Taking the car next week to have pulleys check and sorted.

Many thanks once again.
