Default Setting exhaust cam timing 1999 C70

Just did a head gasket on a 1999 c70 2.4 liter motor. Got the timing correct putting it back together but didn't get the exhaust cam seal back in correct and had to take it apart again. Now the problem, I can't seem to get the exhaust cam timing correct and need to know the timing marks on the cover conside with #1 cylinder or setting it up correctly. Volvo mechanics in my area consider this knowledge the holy grail and won't release the info!...lol Thanks for any help.

You need to lock the cams from the back side.
Is your exhaust cam the VVT one or is the Intake the VVT on yours?

yes it is the vvt exhaust version. Kind of a mute point now the cam has turned on the exhaust side. Any way of getting them back aligned?

You need a cam lock tool to set the cams before setting the pulley.
Check out this post the guy made a home made tool for when he did his.

Ya that write up shows how to align them before removal but what if you get them off after removal? We have our exhaust cam timing off and don't know how to get it back in time?

But what my point is you have to lock the cams in orderto set the timing correctly.
It would be easy if you had marked the timing setup before removing everything.
But since nothing was really marked and the cams aren't locked it is almost impossible to set the timing unless the cams are locked.
If the cam and gear was keyed it would be easy.
But you have to lock the cams then do a special presidure to get it set up correctly.
