lifter pinging - timing belt and exhaust cam involved
I have a 1999 V70 2.4L B2554S engine - non VVT basic 5 cylinder. While changing timing belt exhaust cam moved ccw. Turned it cw back to correct timing mark, installed belt and adjusted tensioner with no further problems. Turned engine through to be sure no binding - all good - then started engine & sounds like a lifter pinging. Any way to readjust exhaust cam or am I screwed? It's a friends car and trying to finish up. Just changed the oil a couple of days ago. The car is up on jacks - front end - when I started it up. Sounds like a lifter pinging. The sprockets look the same. Someone told us could be an oil pressure problem but worried -
Are the lifters so sensitive on a non vvt engine that inadvertently moving the exhaust cam cw or ccw 3/5 teeth & then returning back to the proper timing mark that it could cause a lifter to start ticking once restarting after replacing the timing belt and putting all the timing marks correct and tensioning the belt correctly. I find it hard to believe they can be that sensitive but the fact is this problem did not exist prior to replacing the timing belt.
