I had my front and rear shocks replaced at 80,00mi and saw a big improvement in handling. The car was not plunging on heavy breaking, much better in cornering, better comfort. I put Blistein HD touring shock (I think Sachs is the OEM shock) and I am very satisfied with the performance. I bought a package on ebay, paid around $280 for the set of four, had it replaced by a small shop I used since 3 years for $120 (front shock) and $60 (Rear). If you do that, I would advice you check if the shock mounts are good, it would be a good opportunity to do it as it only take 5min to replace when shocks are out.

mileage has no bearing on the life of shocks/springs. It is the driving style and road surface that determines whether shocks are due for a change up. Remember, a 4000 pound auto that is front wheel drive with unequal length half shafts and a weight bias that is abysmal will never ever in your life time give you "sports car" handling. The brakes are inadequate for it's weight also. If you are looking for performance think an e-30 BMW that you can purchase for a very reasonable cost and can be changed into a 'beast'. for little money.
