What to do with 2000 C70 w/ bad transmission?
I have a 2000 C70 that needs a new transmission. It'll still get around town, but when it gets on the highway, it gets stuck in 4th gear, and won't shift until you shut the engine off and restart it. I can't afford a new OR rebuilt transmission. It's in great shape, other than that. I want to get rid of it, and get as much $ for it as I can. I'm not sure if I should try to sell it for parts, or see if anyone is interested in buying it and putting a new transmission in it. It's got 128K miles. What to do? Please help!
Price the car on www.NADAGuides.com, then subtract the cost of a transmission replacement at a normal indi shop and try to sell it for that amount. I would think $1,000 would be about it.
I just bought a 2000 V70 AWD wagon, 90,000 miles, automatic trans.,no visible rust, sunroof, leather, etc, dirty, (but will clean up), in decent condition, BUT WITH TRANSMISSION TROUBLES, for $700. When cold, car will run good, but shift hard. After 10 to 15 minutes it will suddenly lose all movement. Local trans shops won't touch it, with 2 exceptions; one shop doesn't appear to do much import work and the other is a four wheel drive specialist. Local Volvo dealer and Ann Arbor independent Volvo shop will ONLY exchange trans with reman unit from Volvo at guesstimate price of $3200 to $4500. They say trans is a "sealed unit" and do not repair them, only exchange. Volvo dealer says no filter is available. I will do flush per directions found here on Matt's site and IPD sheet and report results here. Ihave been closely following V70 wagon sales on Ebay and sold prices for decent ones with no expressed trans issues vary widely, from around $2500 to upwards of $6000. Used transmissions for my 2000 go for $500 to $1200, labor to install goes for around $500 to $600. Hope this helps you make decision.
If you dig in our 850 sticky you'll see auto trans info. What I did was drain and fill 3 times. That helped my bad tranny tremendously. Mine would not shift into 1st and 2nd when cold. Had to use the winter button to get moving. After the fluid changes it ran ok. I found 2 tranny's for $100 and someone to replace it for $400. I did purchase the RMS, input shaft seals, fluid, etc., for about $45. Then had the RMS change since the tranny was off, $45. So the job cost me almost $600 (I do consider myself blessed with this deal).

Had a simular problem with a tranny 2 yrs ago, did the fluid changes like was suggested & went to FORD garage parts dept. got bottle of: Additive Friction Modifier, 4 fluid ounces, put in tranny. Use rubber gloves this stuff really stinks! normally used for differentials. Tranny been working like a charm ever since. Put same stuff in my F150 Supercrew & wife's Lincoln LS after tranny fluid & filter change. Old mechanic told me about it! Also have used: LUCAS Transmission Fix Stops Slip 4 yrs. Change fluid, replace 1 qt fluid w/the Lucas. Has worked well. Just suggestion.
