A word of caution. You cannot............I repeat...........you cannot shoot a person stealing your property............period! You may only use deadly force if your life is threatened and if the "theif" has a tyre iron taking wheels off from a vehicle..........well.........that does not constitute deadly force as you have the option of running away. God help you if you ever shoot someone in the back.......................if so you will be in prison for a long long time. In the back means that the neer-do-well was leaving...........no threat there. Truly sir, you can speak with the language that you do but as one who works in the legal system I would caution you about confronting a tyre thief with a pistol as quite frankly you have insurance to cover your loss and the police department is but a cell phone call away. I would love to represent the tyre thief as his estate would profit from your bravado.

what statedo you practicein Reg? i wouldn't engauge a guy stealing if he isn't posing a threat or if he's giving up, but i will confront him with it and hold them there til the police decide to show up. i'm too much of a man to shoot someone in the back, that just wouldn't be honorable. yeah, i have insurance, but any wayyou look at it i will be paying, with the trouble of having to get new wheels, getting my car off of bricks, and possibly paying higher premiums, do i deserve that? do you deserve that?

another thing to add, why is it so easy to 1. buy a gun legally 2. aquire a conceiled weapons permit, but they make things so hard to for you to use your weapon on BAD people who do dirt? i can't depend on the cops or the neighborhood watch to come and save me or anybody else.

thanks for the advice Reg, any more knowledge you wanna share will be welcomed.

Advice is free. Just recently a fellow in one of our southern states shot and killed two thieves who had completed a breaking and entering on his neighbor's house. Unfortunately he is now on trial for murder and I guarantee you he will do time. The best place for a weapon is in your house. I too have two locked and cocked pistols that I have 'hot loaded' myself with jacketed hollow points but keep them out of sight but readily available. I know your frustration as I have little paitience for a thief! Believe it or not, if you simply discharge your weapon in the air as a 'warning' to a thief, will land you in jail as having performed a dangerous discharge. I spent two tours in country and was shot, macheteed, a prisoner and tortured.............I too have little tolerance for some people but.................I have learned to restrain myself. I know for a fact that Florida is in the midst of a crime wave..............I spent a couple years doing trial work in the larger cities of Florida and did not enjoy being out in the evenings. Hang in there quit making your Volvo so inviting.............put a little mud on it. All kidding aside, I believe you reside in an apartment complex and I'll bet you a couple of bucks that your thief resides in that same complex. It's a proven fact. Sit out in your auto some night and you may very well see your 'friends'.

r.

p.s. I am in Newark, New Jerseythis monthand if you want to see crime in action.........well this is the place!

i really feel hand cuffed now that i have a gun. if people do wrong they should get what they deserve. life is all about taking chances, if they take the chance of stealing anything from a person, they run the chance of meeting the owner face to face and they run the chance of getting some harm done.

I repeat from page 2of this thread:

This kind of thing, really can dampen your spirit.
These ******** haven't a clue about creativity or work. They could care less about what people think or feel. They would stab each other in the the back for the right price.
That said, A set of wheels are not worth a trip behind bars or worse, they wouldn't hesitate to 'bust some caps' (back at you).
Keep cool, have the local finest take care of the shootouts and only uncock the Glock (Smith and Wesson) if your back is against the wall.

Nice purchace by the way. An 'even playing field' is in your right.
The right tobear armsIS your Constitutional Right.
Make sure you understand the gray areas of self defence.
Keep listening to Reg's advice. Cooler heads prevail.

yeah, your right,

but i can't help to think what if i catch themon the tail-end of the theft and they wanna run or drive away with my stuff, then what? i cant shoot to stop them and it's too late to call the police to catch them.

i can't even pull my weapon out on them to scare them away. these laws almost protects the criminals and gives tham a chance to steal again.

^Is it even illegal to brandish a firearm?

Because I was thinking that that's all you need to do to really teach those crooks a lesson. You don't need to shoot them to teach them a lesson.

I don't think that is legal.

Someone my mom knows did that to someone on the highway for cutting them off and doing something else and the person that was doing the cutting off followed the guy home and called the police and the guy who brandished the gun was arrested.

Yes it is a criminal act to point a weapon at any individual IF YOUR LIFE IS NOT IN IMMEDIATE DANGER. Unless an individual is say, threatening you with a weapon you MAY NOT pull a weapon and brandish it...............PERIOD. Now, you can tell the 'thief' that you have a weapon 'handy' but you may not pull it and point. You have to realize that the loss of wheels, bill fold, and personal belongings does not constitute an imminent threat to your life. Truly the only safe place that a weapon can be used on an individual is if a neer-do-well is in your residence and believe me, when it is found that he has been shot in the back (escaping) you will do time! You have to understand that most citizens want to shoot a thief but that action constitutes a greater punishment to the thief than the time he would spend in jail for a simple act of thievery.

Wow I just stumbled across this thread!
American people have always thought it was there god given right to own a gun for protection, while i don't judge anyone in life (it's not my job thats why we have a god) i don't understand the logic, a gun is so final.
In Australia we have i think the toughest gun laws in the world.
It is totally illiegal to own a gun for protection purposes, you can own a gun for hunting and sporting target shooting purposes but thats it!! all those people must have the guns registered with the authorities, owning a gun or having a gun outside these guideline would see you in jail for years no question.
We had a massive gun buy back after the port arthur massacre where 30+ people were gunned down by a fu*kwit, he was mentally unstable, kids were hunted down behind trees and shot while there parents watched.
After that things were different, i'm glad i live in a country that has such strict gun laws.
I do although understand that many people work hard for their things and that it hurts when stuff gets stolen, but i don't think that the punishment fits the crime...death for stealing i thought that went out with the convict days.

goodluck

Interesting that you bring Port Authur to the discussion. Your country already had very strick gun laws in effect in 1996. Had one ofBryants early victims been armed, this would not have been world news.
He drove a Volvo at the start of his rampage. ShouldIT be an accessory to the crime? What if he had run children over with the car, if he didn't have a gun?
My point being: It's not the weapon, it's the criminal.

Guns never killed anyone and never will. People with guns kill people.

Also we have gun laws here in the states and they are good, we don't need more laws.

Also you say you can only own a gun for this that and the other. What is to say I buy a shotgun over there for hunting but also use it to protect myself and my family. They cannot control that. Yeah they can say is this for protection you say no but guess what you lied and you are using it for protection they would never know it.

Having a gun for protection is our right here in the states. Owning a gun is our right here in the states. Do we have to register guns yes we do.

I suppose it's all in the attitude.
We just don't see guns as a way of protection here in Australia.
We never have, there are few (i know of one) gun shops in Sydney.
it's just not part of our culture to have guns,
or really want guns, but as i said i'm not here to judge anyone.
it's just interesting and strange to here people tallking about shooting someone for stealing a set of mags & tyres.
That would be enough in Australia to have the cops knock on the door!
Gotta love the net it's the international communication and cultures that i find most interesting.
I did'nt know that bryant drove a volvo...
i knew this thread was relevant in some way.

This is where i leave this thread see you all in the technical forums

God luck

these gun laws her suxs! whatever happend to citizens arrest? thiefs arebad people and they are in the wrong. there are concequences in every part of life.

when a man thinks about committing himself to steal another person's hard earned money, property or anything has to deal with the chance of being harmed, but when the laws ties your hands like they do with with these gun laws it really depresses me. i don't even feel like i have any protection with this gun in my hand.

and just to be clear, i'm very capable of snatching the life out of a thief, but i don't wann kill anybody. if ishoot them to stop them i should be fine, if i shoot at them, i should be fine, but the laws don't think so. another thing to think about is that these thiefs out here just shotkilled an off-duty cop at a ATM machinecause they wanted to rob him, but when the cop I.D. himself as a cop they killed him, so why should i have any remorse for a dirty a$$ thief who could do the same to me or any of you?

^You know, now that I think about it, if you simply brandish a firearm, that is enough to scare most thiefs away and teach them a lesson. I doubt they'd come back after having a pistol shoved in their face.

I don't know the statistic, but most situations are resolved simply by brandishing a firearm without shots being fired.

If you pull a gun on him, it's unlikely he's going to press charges and then implicate himself for theft....

I just read this entire thread. I don't own a gun, and probably never will. Afraid my wife would get pissed at me for leaving the milk out and blow my head off.

Seriously, even if I had a gun I would not confront anybody outside of my house no matter what they were doing. I would just call the cops and let them do their thing. Unless it's a threat to me or my family, they can have anything they want. Once they enter my house the rules change though. Not sure exactly what I would do though. I do keep a baseball bat handy, but that's about it. Hopefully the dogs will scare them off before I need to do anything.

I guess I'm just not into being the tough guy. Probably why I was in the US Navy and not the Marines or the Army. They let us shoot a 22 rifle one time in boot camp and that was the only time I held a real gun while I was in the Navy. The good news is I live out in the country and we have next to no crime whatsoever.

Interesting reading here for a Volvo forum that's for sure.

Music calms the savage beast.
Jim, you could dangle a piece of your beef jerky in front of an intruder and they would sit still and enjoy, giving you time to call the police.
But with the right lawyer, they could get you for bribery.
It's the lawyers that have created this protection for criminals.
