"pop" sound when turning and braking
Greetings Folks,
I need help diagnosing an unusual sound on our 2002 s40 (usa) with 112,000 miles.
My wife says she hears a pop or clunking sound coming from underneath the drivers side front wheel when she makes a turn or hits the brakes. The car also will "shudder" sometimes when accelerating.
Might it be a CV Joint problem?
Thanks

RE: "pop" sound when turning and braking
Greetings,
Yes might as well be the cv-joint, check for the rubber dust boot for damage/loss of grease. If the joint is ok, check the driveshaft & suspension components visually. If everything looks ok, you'd have to visit dealer/shops that specialise in Swedish/European makes.
Good luck,
JPN

Hi Dizzy,
I don't know if you have resolved this problem yet, but I was experiencing a similar issue. For me it just happened to be a control arm bushing that was worn down. This can cause the "clunk" sound that is occurring, and happens when the car is at low speeds or you are turning. This is a really inexpensive fix, so before you start sinking money into anything else, check your bushings. Hope this helps!
Connor.

I have the same issue, at low speeds in my'00 s40, i get a clunk sound, same with big pot holes, or at highway speed in left hand curves when I unload the weight from the drivers side, I just replaced suspension all around and was told they couldn't see anything, it goes in thurs to b looked at again, I'll post the findings and hopefully it'll b more help.(front bushings have been replaced)

Did you have the strut mounts replaced? I had one making a clunking sound over bumps on the pax side. Sounded like it was coming from inside the dash behind the glove box.
Also had the anti-sway bar mounts break one at a time. The second was probably because it was overstressed from the first break. Anyway, if you remove the front tire and follow the anti-sway bar as it travels back under the car you will see the aluminum and rubber mounts that hold it from moving. When broken it allows the anti-sway bar to hit the cross member causing a definite metal-to-metal thumping sound.
