Default 01 S40 Headlight problem

I have a problem with the passenger side headlight, it only goes on sometimes. Sometimes it goes on when the key is turned but once the car starts it stays off and could or could not come on 5-10 mins later. is this a cem problem? if so can the relay be changed or i would have to change the cem completely? Any feedback is appreciated, thx

From what I've read here there is a relay on the CEM that can be replaced. Do a search for headlight not working or relay on CEM, something like that. There are a few threads discussing replacing the relay. I have not done this yet so I'm not much help.

thx for the reply, yeah I saw in the forum that guys managed to change just the relay. Could it be something else though? there is no module in the headlight assembly itself, is there?

I had the same experience with intermittent lighting before it went out completely. Fuses, bulbs were fine. There was a Volvo forum in the UK that helped me out. The CEM has a relay for both low beam lights. Found the part ($2.USD) on the 'net. Had to de-solder that bad relay and solder in the replacement. To split the CEM case, remove the decal that those cheeky Volvo engineers concealed the Philips screw with. Also, use a "solder-sucker"---@ five bucks so you don't have electrical problems down the road.

I never fixed the problem with my headlight as it was working fine, especially in the winter. It started acting up again, the plastic on the socket had disintegrated and is no longer there. Could that be the problem? Should i try changing the socket first before the CEM? thx

Yes, I'd say work the socket first if you can to see if you can make a connection (ie wiggle when its not lighting up) - and also try a new bulb to make sure its seating ok (always good to have a spare). You can also buy a used CEM for $50 or so on Ebay or a yard if you can't find the relays or don't have a steady solder hand :-). Getting at the CEM is pretty straight forward (its under the dash by the hood release) but you will need to loosen a bracket to get it to pull out to rocker off the connectors
