Default 02 S40 messed up idle and stuttering on acceleration

2002 Volvo S40 1.9t with just over 100k miles on it.

When the car gets up to temp it will start to "stutter" or "misfire" when slowing and stopping at lights. It also happens if I get on the gas too fast on the highway (currently have about 1/4 mile to get over 3 lanes to take early exit because of construction) I've noticed that putting it in neutral helps this greatly. Last year the CEL came on with cyl 3 misfire. I replaced the plugs and eliminated the CEL.

After searching the forums I decided to check out the coils today. I took them into Auto Zone and they measured the ohms. Everything checked out fine with them. The guy did say it might be different once they are hot. He said the coils themselves physically checked out as well. Would hate to drop $100 into something that doesn't need to be fixed.

Any help would be appreciated. This is getting really aggravating. It is getting worse and there is clearly a problem but it won't throw any codes.

For me it was the coils. Mine also checked within tolerance which caused many headaches as I tried to fix everything else. Once I finally took the plunge and bought new coils it fixed the problem.

Thanks, man! I decided to take a chance and replaced them. Seems to be working a lot better now. No stutter at idle or hard acceleration.

Weather has been cooler so I'm hoping that isn't the reason it is working better. My wife said it was bad when she was leaving for work so she took the other car last night and I replaced the coils and it seemed just fine.

I used duralast coils from autozone. The clip to secure the harness doesn't really latch but it is a pretty snug fit and it isn't a moving part.

Thanks again for the reply
