Last night my wife's s40 got stuck in neutral and wont come out. It started with her going into reverse and then trying to go to drive, it stopped in neutral and wont move out of it. Had to have it towed home. Could this be the button on the shifter, I have jiggled, shook and cussed and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions.

 

Once I was able to look at it good light, it seems the boot surrounding the shifter has fallen apart. Once I was able to pick all of the pieces of rubber out it started working fine again. I hope that is all it was, but it does seem to be ok now.

it's what I am told is a 2004 and 1/2. Dealer says I have to say the half as they made changes.

Now a message has come on saying "gear indication service required". it is still shifting fine.

What would this message mean?
