key stuck in 06 s40 ignition
I'm having the same problem. Key keeps sticking in the ignition. Car shuts off but interior power stays on. Sometimes it eventually clicks and releases the key, other times I have to disconnect the battery cable. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with Park. Any ideas on what I need to do? Can the mechanism that latches onto the key be bad and need replacing?

key stuck in 06 s40 ignition
I've seen a lot of posts related to gear shifter stuck. I have played with the gear shifter a lot. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the shifter. Although I haven't ruled out a disconnect between the shifter and the ignition system. I believe there is a wire that connects the two. Also have seen threads about gunk building up in the ignition and interfering with the sensitive sensor system. I have to turn the car on and off a ton of times. Eventually, I can get it to "click" and the key will turn the rest of the way. Until I can get it to "click" the key stops just short of a full turn necessary to pull out the key. Occasionally, it doesn't "click" and I have to disconnect the battery cable for overnight. Anyone else have a strong lead so I don't waste money at a dealership????
Also, is there anywhere I can go for a schematic of how to take out the dashboard and console to expose this stuff? I grew up on a farm and am handy with tools. I'd like to try to problem solve this myself before a dealership charges $400 bucks to install a new ignition system without really knowing that that's the issue. From other Volvo blogs, that seems to be the default solution and it sometimes isn't a fix for the real problem.

I had this same problem this morning in my 2006 S40, Key would not come out of the ignition and would get stuck between the off and 1 position. I had no choice but to bring it to the Volvo dealership to get this fixed. I'm in a bind for time and I could not leave my car sitting on. They said it was the starter control unit, roughly $500 parts and labor. I love that little car so I'm willing to spend the cash to keep driving it.

worked fine after that. Car ended up getting totaled in an accident but performed very well with the rear collision. Very safe cars.
wish I could be more help!

Sometimes the shifter release button on the handle gets stuck in or the button's linkage actually can break which doesn't allow the shif interlock to release the key. See if you can manually pop that button out. You can then spray some lubricant to allow the button to release more freely - or if broken you need to replace the button mechanism.

Thanks a lot mt6120! I did put lubrikant and shifter release button feels like normal. Very smooth in and out. However I have a feeling it's the wire from shifter to the ignition lock (steering wheel lock?) that is broken somehow. So the wire is actually mounted to button (on shift side)? (I will try to get into the "buttons linkage". I have S40 year 2000. Have not found and videos or guides, so far, in how to fix it myself. I will however not pay 500-700 bucks at dealer. If it's the wire then I should be able to fix it myself. I want to fix it because total milage is only unbelievable 7.000 kilometers :-)

if I recall, the button has a linkage that goes down the shaft of the shifter and there should be a clip to remove to pop off the handle (see if you can google for instructions - its been a while since I played with the shifter on our S40. Here's a diagram and some other parts that may be in play

There's only an electronic connection between the ignition switch and the shifter. Make sure the dash display is indicating "P" before shutting the car off to pull the key out. If it isn't, you need to figure out why - you can try "rowing" the shifter through all the positions a few times, which can (usually temporarily) "fix" flaky connections in the switch that reports on the shift lever position.
