help - Key stuck in the ignition. 2001 S40
I have a 2001s40. Today I went to move my car and the key was stuck in the on position. I had to disconnect the battery just to shut it off. The key is still stuck in the on position. I tried wd40 and tapping on the key. As well as moving the steering wheel back and forth. I can not get the key out or even move it to the 1 or off position. Can anyone help me?

Yes. That was the first thing I checked. I finally took plyers for leverage and got it in the off position and out. Using the spare key but that wants to stick as well, just not as bad. I keep hearing of the key sticking in the off or 1position but not in the running position.
There is a cable that locks the ignition / key. A Volvo mechanic told me to cut the cable once I had the key out. That worked. There is also a little piece of metal that breaks off in the bottom of the ignition and gets jammed in the cable end. I seen a write-up on Matt's site where a guy cut a small plate under the ignition and pulled that broken piece out and all was well.
I have a 2002 S40 and the shift button is a little sticky. When placed in park, if the button has not fully popped back out, my key is locked in until fully released.
Might be your issue as well.

Yep, I've had the sticky shifter release button problem on my 2000 S40 as well... I just turned the car back on, rowed the shifter then made sure the button popped back out when I went into park.
When the ignition failed in my 2000 V40 my Indy Volvo mechanic said it was a common prob as these vehicles age...expensive repair.
In luck as mine failed only 5 miles from my mechanics shop. There was no indication of a problem before the failure.
Flipping n-mare if this had happened out on the road...towing and ordering parts.
