anyway, on to the thread
i just purchased a 2000 s40 1.9T with 42k miles, so far im loving it and today i sent it in for an oil change at volvo.

At the end of the service, the service consultant told me that the gear shift **** is cracked which is why sometimes in Park, the key would not come out. It has never happened to me before but the gear **** felt a little weird, like kinda stiff, i didnt think much of it.

The dealer quoted me 180 + labor to change it which rounded up to 300++ to change the ****.

I felt it was a little excessive and was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem as the technician mentioned that it was a common problem.

 

Mine cracked a while back. I had a little chunk fall off completely. It sticks every now and again, but not a big deal. $300 sounds a bit steep for a "non-critical" piece.

 

You can replace the **** your self in about 10 minutes.

 

It does happen on the S40.I have just changed mine from the stock plastic shifter to a leather one. If you are close, will give you my old one. They just pull off, but it takes a lot of effort to get them off. BJ

Actually, I got mine from the local Volvo dealership. I believe that the leather shift **** comes on s40's with the leather package and also on the s40 sports. I also bought an s40 sport leather wrapped wheel with the thumb supports and it is MUCH nicer than the wheel the car came with . I would be glad to send you my old ****-I beleive the USPS still delivers to the islands!Will be glad to get the part number for the shift **** tonite as I did save the box it came in . BJ

 

Trinity: Part number for leather shift **** is 30623148. Again if you dont buy a leather one will be glad to send you my OEM one. BJ
