Default 2000 s40 leaking oil from turbo

so my s40 started leaking oil about 1 month ago and the oil light came on so on my way to work i put in a quart of oil but it started smoking by the time i made it to work, so i stopped driving it until i had time to take it to a mechanic, before i took it to the mechanic i checked the oil level and it was empty so i put in 5 quarts and drove it to have it checked out, the mechanic said the leak was coming from the turbo and it would have to be replaced although he did not remove the turbo, it drove fine on the way home but started smoking again because it was leaking so much all over the engine.

so I'm going to do the repair myself since he said it would cost around $1000 to fix but i don't know if the turbos bad or just the gaskets on the turbo.

Make sure it is the turbo and not the VVT pulley leaking the oil.

Probably isn't your situation, but my wife's 2000 V40 developed an oil leak that was rather hard to find. Turned out that it was the seal at the bottom of the return oil line from the turbo to the engine case. We'd pressure wash the bottom of the car and then run the car on the lift for a half hour and it wouldn't leak anything. Drive it around the block for 1 min and there would be a puddle under it when you stepped out. Apparently soemthing to do with the pressure in the turbo. $.50 part.

well actually i think i have the same problem, i took off the heat shield thing and found the leak.

at first i thought it was the pipe had like a stress crack or something as it looked like it was coming from it but i put epoxy on it and it still leaks.

i have no idea how to seal the oil return line, there's a small metal o-ring so maybe i just need to replace that?

Where on the engine is the turbo return line seal?. My S-40 is leaking oil somewhere below the heat shield

i found the leak on mine and it was the oil return line itself, so i replaced the black metal pipe that is on top of the turbo to the oil pan

if I remember correctly, there is one 8mm bolt that holds that return line onto the bottom of the turbo. you take that bolt out and you can twist the return line sideways and pull it up out of the block. at the base where it goes into the block is a rubber seal, something like an o-ring. You'll laugh, but I didn't want to run to the dealer to pick up a new seal so I ran down to my local Ace hardware and found a seal that was similar to the one that was on it... I think it was some sort of toilet seal. Popped it on there and it's still good 20,000 miles later!

the line in question is under the turbo on the back side of the engine.

On the top of the turbo you have the feed and on the bottom of the turbo you'll find the return line.
The rusty pipe with the green ring on the end of it as the said leakage is mostly caused by this one little green seal.

These will be needed if one to tackle this issue at home.

than it was the oil feed line that was leaking from mine, it was the black pipe on top of the turbo which did not have any rubber o-rings and didn't have any gaskets only copper o-rings on both ends.

That seems like rip off.For that money you can buy another 3 complete S40 of that age and not only an engine.Oil leak if not the engine block itself is broken can be fixed.Where is the leak BTW?Unless you have the engine seized up because of lack of oil resulting the loss of oil pressure you should see someone who knows a thing or two about cars.
