2000 V40 dry starts - two seconds of no lubrication
Almost every time I start my 2000 V40 I can hear clatter for a second or two. It's a low mileage engine - 100,000 miles - in good condition.
The oil pump must be losing prime.....or something. I vaguely remember something about o-rings and oil pressure in these engines.
Any suggestions?

i have read somewhere ??? that low quality oil filters can cause the problem you are describing.
I don't recall where unfortunately.
Maybe someone else can confirm this thru experience??
edit: It is caused by the anti drainback valve either not functioning or existing.
The oil filter cartridge housing drains dry whilst the engine is off so the pump has to refill
first on starting up the engine.

You have the same car I have apparently. Our cars have a cartridge oil filter on the bottom of the engine under the oil pan at the lowest point in the oil circuit. So the oil filter can not drain down.

Changing the oil pan is a relatively easy , but very messy job. Not only requiring a number of o rings, but also ensuring those same o rings stay put during installation. MOST EVERYONE NEVER CHANGES THEIR OIL PANS. And this is a problem. You own a Volvo, you need to do this maintenance. CONTRIBUTING to this issue is the fact that if you don't change your filter, OEM or not, they clog and contribute to oil pan relief valve and o ring issues.
If that anaerobic sealant isn't available to reseal your oil pan , that's another issue created by people that think silicone or another gasket sealant will do the job. Other sealants my temporarily work, but in the long run, fail.
AND if that's not enough, the oil pan passage to the oil trap / PCV system NEEDS TO BE CLEANED OUT,... and no one, absolutely no one does this either. THAT PASSAGE NEEDS TO BE CLEANED OUT BEFORE YOUR LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON AT IDLE. If you have an oil issue, then most likely the PCV system is clogged starting with the oil pan drain passage.
