2001 S40 Jammed sunscreen/sunroof
Hi,
I just bought a used 2001 S40 from a private dealer. This is my first time with a Volvo. My other car was totaled in an accident and the Insurance adjuster for the person who hit me, with my lawyers insistence, gave me less than $2K. With the help of a friend, and Craigslist, we found a Volvo "collector" of sorts. Will be interesting since I have a limited income.
This is my issue. Not familiar with sunscreen/sunroof cars, the manual says that the sunscreen automatically opens with the sunroof. When I closed the sunroof, the sunscreen(picture in manual says sun visor for this),started to close with the sunroof. It became jammed, and the window would not close all the way. Since it looked like some clips on the side of the screen, were broken off(probably when window would not close), I was able to remove the sunscreen from the roof. I was able to get the sunroof to work normally with it out of the way.
Is there a way to put the sunscreen back on as it is no longer stuck in the track with the window? I am on a fixed low income, and do not have a lot of money to have a dealer "fix it".
Any advice of DIY without having to remove the whole window assembly would be helpful.
Thanks.

My new 2001 S40 had a similar issue. On the way home I was pushing buttons galore. It started raining and the roof would not close because the sunscreen went too far. I pulled over and removed mine.
Must have happened before cause the wind deflector was gone. I figure the PO broke it. I grabbed a few plastic screen parts from the junk yard and quickly broke one of them as I tried to re-install the screen and the same thing happened.
I believe the glass should close and leave the screen open. That is how I have seen Fords and Hondas work. Then we can manually pull the screen shut. But once I get the screen in, the glass grabs it going back or fwd.
Looking forward to an expert answer on how to get the screen installed and working properly.
Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with the 2001 s40 I just bought. It was working while I was playing around with it at the dealer, brought it home and went to shut the sunroof and it pulled the screen shut with it. I didn't even realize it was doing that until I heard a crack and the plastic handle snapped a bit and from the outside of the car I could see the shade was not on it's track so I popped the clip back into place but the sunroof must be grabbing onto something on the shade because it continues to pull the shade shut when it closes and I cannot close the window all the way.
Have either of you guys found a solution to your problem?

I was under the impression that on S/40 or V40's the sunroof should not be operated unless the sunshade has already been opened. (manually)
I think I saw it stated in the 2002 S40/V40 owner manual but shall have a checkup and advise back asap.
Mine is a 2002 V40 but I imagine the sunroof system is similar.

I actually removed the shade altogether and that allowed the sunroof to fully close. What looks like happened is there are two metal bars on the underside of the sunroof, front and back, that act as bumpers for the shade when you open and close it and they are only held on but a strip of glue. They must've fallen off so the shade opened more than it should and the sunroof was then grabbing onto it and pulling it shut as the sunroof shut.
Basically by removing the shade and just taking those two bars out the sunroof operates the way it should and unless you're someone that prefers having the shade closed (I always leave mine open) then the shade doesn't need to be there at all, no harm done by removing it.
Hope this helps!

Have read the owners manual on the subject of the sunroof operation.
It states that the sunshade is manually operated firstly but then goes on to say that it opens automatically when you open the sunroof. (a little contradictory?)
It also states that the sunscreen must not be closed with the sunshade already closed as jamming may occur.
I basically always open or close the sunshade manually prior to operating the power sunroof in any way or form so jamming can never occur.
Taylor Strobl, as stated above basically plays it safe in the same manner apart from having totally removed the sunshade.

I have a 2002 S80 with the same darn issues....sun shade went back with the glass, got it pulled out but now the glass won't close all the way....I'd be more than happy to remove the shade if this will make the glass open and close properly....is there any trick in removing the sun shade?? appreciate any points....my 940 is a breeze to work on...this S80 is going to be a PITA.....I suspect
