Default 2001 V40 questions (window, key, hatch)

Cross-post from V40 forum, since I understand the S40 is very similar....

My wife's friend parked her (sadly neglected) 2001 V40 at our house for the holidays and asked me to look it over. So far I've changed an O2 sensor and plugs to get the CEL off, and filled the brake fluid to get the brake light off. Now that the dash lights are off, I have some general questions:

1. The driver window does not go up or down. When I push the switch, I hear what sounds like the motor inside, but the window remains fully closed. If I push the switch in the down direction, the motor will whir until I push the switch in the up position. Is there a common/likely cause of for this?

2. The only key I have is an old-fashion key, with no remote or switches on it. Is this the valet key? I find it odd that there is no way to unlock anything but the driver door -- so maybe that's because I don't have the remote key? If so, is there a way to order a key based on the VIN?

3. Said key doesn't open the rear hatch -- doesn't go all the way in. Is that normal or does it mean there's something wrong with the lock in the hatch?

4. The cup holder in the dash is broken. The arm just flops around -- seems like it's missing a spring or something. Is this a common failure and are replacements/fixes easy to come by?

5. Is there a DIY fix-it site for these cars and/or online exploded views of various assemblies? Looking for resources for studying up.

Thanks Volvo world!

2- The key fob is missing. The 2000-2004 models have the simple key as you describe with no built-in electronic functions like the newer 2004.5+ models. The key fob has the door unlock, trunk unlock, and emergency buttons. You will need one programmed to the car and I'd bet money it's off to the dealer for you.

3- Something is blocking the key in the trunk lock. Have you tried some WD40 or silicone lubricant (warmed to room temp before it's used below freezing outside)? Might just be in need of some TLC.

4-The cup holder is very brittle. On mine a small spring broke which let the big arm just flop around. Then the bottom arm broke rendering the holder useless. The fix was a junkyard replacement.

5- You are posting in one of the DIY sites now. There are several others. Plus lots of youtube videos. Other resources include VIDA software if you have 32 bit Windows XP Pro or 7 Pro or Ultimate. If you are truly obsessed (like me) you buy the DiCE scanner to go along with your OBD-II code scanner. Another source of information is the Volvo parts suppliers themselves. Places like IPD and FCP Euro will answer many service questions although I believe you have to use a non-1 800 number. A small price to pay if you need information right now.

Maybe you could do a youtube video on how to fix the window motor?
