Question 2001 Volvo S40 Hard to Start Please Help...

Hello everyone. I need some assistance. I purchased a 2001 Volvo S40 and am having some minor trouble. In the mornings when cold, it simply will not start without pumping the accelerator lightly and then I have to hold it at about 3500 rpm for 3 minutes before it will run. It also smells very rich when this happens. After that, it runs and starts fine for the most part for the rest of the day.

I have replaced the following items:
MAS Air Flow Meter (it was reading low voltage)
Fuel Pressure Regulator
Coolant Temperature Sensor
...all parts from the local Volvo dealer with genuine Volvo Parts.

Not to mention I have also checked the car for a possible vacuum leak and have uncovered nothing. Anyone's assistance with this situation would be great.

I love this little car and am about to throw in the towel.
Thank you,
New Volvo Owner

Thank you for your advise. It turns out that after I took off the idle air control valve and cleaned it out, then did a complete carbon cleaning (professional fuel injection service), the car runs perfect!

Default I have a similar problem

Hi there,

I also bought a Volvo S40 2001 and it was working very fine at first.

But then it started to stalls after the car spent to much time not running (24+hrs) when I try to start it. Ive changed the battery. The oil and battery check light are turned on when it happens and I have to push on the accelerator + brakes to put it on idle.

I dont know what to do, can you help?

Thanks.

Either the Idle Air Control motor or the Fuel Pressure Regulator. I'd suggest cleaning the IAC motor first before replacing. Also, check the fuel pressure first before buying a new regulator.
