Hello Forum,
Two months ago my 2001 Volvo S40 (138,000 miles, burning quart of oil every 1,500 miles) lost acceleration on the freeway (no pedal response, wouldn't get above 2,000 RPM) and coasted to a stall. Managed to get it back up and running (some white smoke on start, no smell).
Took it to local mechanic. He did timing belt, O2 sensor (front), ignition coils, spark plugs, new cam cover (he said the timing belt was covered in oil), fuel filter and related items. Basically a tune up with replacement cam cover and timing belt. $2,200 in total repairs.
Got the car back. It drove okay for a week or two, but was slow to start. I put a new battery in.
A few days later, same loss of pedal response, this time with low idle. Took it back to mechanic. New idle air control valve, BG pressurized fuel rail cleaning. $300 in repairs.
Car drove fine for 3 weeks, then sat in airport parking for a week. Very rough on start up, lots of smoke (slight rotten egg), sputtering ... finely ran smooth and drove home fine.
Two days later, same loss of pedal response on freeway. Got off the freeway, gave it some gas in N at red light and it belched a huge cloud of white rotten egg smell. Couldn't get it over 40MPH the rest of way back home.
Took it back to my guy again. At this point I'm thinking catalytic converter but he says no (no back pressure or restrictions), so he puts in a new MAF and fuel pump (he said there were some metal shavings in the old one). $880 in repairs.
Then yesterday (one week after last repair) same thing on freeway ... car loses pedal response between 40-50 mph ... car can't get over 2,000-2,200 RPM ... electronic MPG reading of 12.1MPG ... can't get car over 60MPH ... after 10 minutes of this, I come to a stop in traffic. Once I gt going again, car seems back to normal.
Sorry for the long post, but here I am $3,300 in repairs and the car is still not getting it done.
As for CEL codes ... I've had a CEL for a transmission solenoid for a couple years now. The transmission itself hasn't given me any real issues (twice in the last 4 years the car went into limp mode with a blinking trans light, but this has cleared itself up within 24 hours). I don't know of any other codes, but my mechanic might.
Am I crazy to think it could still be the cat acting up intermittently?
Thanks for any help!
Jim
