2002 S40 coolant temp sensor install
I had to change my temperature sensor on the '02 S40 to get the check engine light to turn off (with the light on, I cannot register my vehicle in the state of California). I got my theromostat and temp sensor (the mechanic said they had to do them together) replaced at a Volvo Repair Shop for $150.
It is very easy to replace. The thermostat will come out after you remove the 2 torxes 45 I think screws. Then when you have the top half of the housing off the sensor can easily be removed.
Hi,
I just got a 2001 Volvo s40 and I need to replace the temperature sensor + thermostat in order to pass Wash,DC inspection...i have the both temp sensor and therm but I don't have enough money to pay a mechanic to perform the work...can someone please instruct me on how to install both? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

It is pretty easy to install.
Follow the upper hose to the engine. Where the upper hose attaches to the engine is an aluminum piece.
It has 2 screws holding it on. Remove the 2 screws then remove the upper housing the thermostat.
The sensor screws in the lower housing.
