2002 S40 - DRL problem? Lights ALWAYS on.
Well for those who don't know, DRL = Daytime Running Lights which are required by law in a lot of places, Canada being the one place I'm in requires DRLs. Here's my issue, There is a headlight **** correct? 3 positions 0, >< , and Low Beams. My problem is that the lighting of this car STAYS the same (full power) at 0 and Low Beam (two extremes of the ****) no matter what. Only when the car is off do I notice that only the second selection puts all but the headlights on.
Consistent with my manual however states that in position 0, only the DRLs come on, and I was under the impression that DRLs are low beams illuminated at a lower power output, or just the lights themselves, not my turn signals, license plates, tails, etc. My question here is, is my car broken? Does my relay need replacing? Is there a burnt fuse somewhere I should be looking for? Thanks in advanced guys.

My 2002 S40 does the same thing!!! It's amazing, in a bad way, how many bulbs I've replaced. My suggestion is to get the low burning lights for the running lights and save the super bright ones for the "bright" lights. If not, you'll burn right through the super ones if you try using them for running lights because they run ALL the time. Not to mention SUPER EXPENSIVE. [:-]
I regret not taking my car back when I first noticed this. I guess it's supposed to be a safety feature for the lights to run constantly. But like you said - the car has a 3-position switch (off-parking-on). Yet there isreally only 2 positions (on-parking-on).

On this car the daytime running lights are the same as the low beam headlights. So if you have the DRL feature enabled, then 0 and low beam will do the same thing. There is one difference. You will not be able to turn your bright lights on in the 0 setting....you can flash the lights, but not enable the high beams for any length of time. You can disable the DRL feature if you want to (and can legally operate without them). The procedure is simple and described in the owners manual.

I knw I'll get flack for this but my 04 manual didn't tell me how to disable them, but i found out how..
put the car in the on position< 2 position>, put parking lights on<middle position> pull turn signal lever towards you, while holding it towards you turn car off, and release lever..this should disable the lights being on all the time, one issue, your interior dash lights will still be on all the time, to re-enable the feature, reverse process. hope this helps someone.
and to the people that will complain tome about safety...FYI if Volvo didn't want the consumer to have the option, they wouldn't have made it possible to disable them, so save your breath!
