Default 2002 s40 engine issue: S vs T

Hi everyone!
My first post here

So I've replaced the engine (i had a b4204t3) and it turned out later that apparently they installed a b4204s instead.

They're all the same except for the pistons heating - so I was told. The turbo (t3) engine had special jets to cool the pistons while the S engine seem not to have those.

Does anyone happen to know if thats right? And could it overheat my b4204s?

The pistons are different. the T3 is a turbo engine that has a compression ratio of 9:1 and the NAs (s and s2s) have a compression of 10.5:1. That diff is a bigger cause for concern as you'd add boost on top of a higher compression ratio. Better run high test all the time or you may see a serious knock (pinking) problem.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

Sorry for my english but what do you mean to "run high test all the time" ?

And could you tell how do i check exactly what type of motor i just had installed - does it have a mark somewhere or in VIDA maybe?

high test is slang for premium gas - in the US that's the 93 AKI (R+M/2) number which is roughly equivalent to 97 RON in Europe. So if your local station offers three different grades, high test is the one with the biggest number :-) The idea of the "octane" number is meant as an anti-knock index (hence the AKI reference). This is the fuel's ability to resist inadvertant combustion from compression which can harm the engine. To note, diesel engines fire via compression during normal operation - which is why they typically have compression ratios in the 18:1 range (it takes that much to heat the fuel via compression to ignite).

Now to the pertainent question - how to know which motor you just installed? There should be a sticker on the front of the timing belt cover with the B code (ie B4204T). If you can't find that, look on top of the engine for a machined stamp (hard to see so you may need a bright light) on top towards the firewall by the #1 cylinder.

Got it

The problem with the engine is that i cant see which one it is: the exact place where the letter S or T should be is covered in some kind of erosion so it cant be read (((

But the main point is that the new engine has upper shafts swapped places with each other compared to my old engine. And the camshaft sensor is as well swapped from behind to fromnt (and has a manually prolongued cord - coz it wouldnt reach, somebody prolonged it not me...)

Should i measure the compression in cylinders to see if thats different from the specs?

I went to some garage near me and the guys went inside, smuggled something for a minute and stated that they saw and S there - but i dont know where could they see that..

Is there another way to somehow see whats the engine mark?
