volvo 2002 s40 starting issue
have a Volvo 2002 s40 200,000 kms...last few weeks when start the car , have to keep the key turning for a extra couple of seconds than usual,,so cranking a bit longer before it catches...before used to turn the key and fires up,,,in the last 2 years changed coils,,sparkplugs....took it to Volvo a couple of weeks ago,,and because the car started normal as I guess the car was warm when I got there,,starting issue did not happen and could not find the problem,,so they suggested leave car over night and they would do compression test for $180..could not leave car as need for work,,,anyone have an idea what the problem could be,,,read on the net,,possibly fuel pressure regulator...no engine light is on
thanks
thanks
will have to get this tested..as I don't have a tester
but someone mentioned to turn the key ...wait 5 seconds than start..noticed it did start better ...so most likey fuel related..thinking what you mentied fuel pressure regulator,,or could it be fuel filter and fuel pump

Nothing wrong with changing the fuel filter, especially if it's original.
When my fuel pump failed on my 2001 it simply quit working immediately. If it still starts, it's not the fuel pump.
If you are interested you can buy a fuel pressure tester at Harbor Freight for cheap.

well.brought my car in yesterday for fuel injector service....as read it could help with starting ....on my way home from the fuel injector service,,engine light came on..po171,,,pulled the code and cleared and came back....read it could be vacuum leak or maf sensor...well today the engine light is not on..weird,,,thoughts on that....so next for my starting issue is to change fuel filter and clean maf sensor with maf sensor spray
update while changing tires today...loked under car and I see a hose missing..im pretty sure its missing..and also saw a small hose from the wall of the car by engine..not sure if these two should be all one hose,,,so put tape over one end as was told might be vacuum leak,,and the car started better...

Picture number 3 is the coolant drain fitting for the block.
Not sure where the hose is from. There aren't any vacuum hoses in that area, only coolant and oil.
The nearest vacuum hose is on the other side of the turbo.

That tube is the drain tube for the air conditioner evaporator.
You should stop mucking around before you hurt yourself.
I just fixed this problem on my GF's 2000 V40 1.9T. It had to be turned on, let the fuel pump build up pressure, then cranked. Put a gauge on it and fuel pressure dropped to zero shortly after turning off the key. System should retain abit of pressure. I tried the simplest fix, replacing the fuel pressure regulator, but as I suspected from the beginning it did not cure the residual pressure isue. Problem was a bad residual pressure check valve in the fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump assembly with a low miles used one off Ebay and the problem was cured. This seems to be an issue with the S40 & V40 once they get to 150,000 miles+. Factory cost for a new assembly is $600! I got a used one with 34k miles for $60.
