2002 Volvo S40 key replacement
Hello folks,
How are you? I just got a 2002 Volvo S40 1.9T this weekend. I got it off of a good friend. It was his personal car until he got a nice 2003 Hyundai XG350(a car that is a blast to drive). It only came with one key
This is my first Volvo in 3 years(I had a old 1990 240 DL)
The car came with one key that was taped up because the plastic broke at the part were the key attaches to a key chain (it seems the hole on this key is made of the same flimsy plastic i encountered on my Toyota) The key works fine on the key ring but I question its long term well being.
This is the regular key and not the fob/key combo
If i understand it correctly, the key for this car has a chip in it so that it has to go to the dealer to program?
How much does it cost to have a regular key(non remote head) made and programed?
Can I get a new key blank on ebay or a hardware store and have the dealer or hardware store cut it and then take my old key and tape it to the top of the ignition lock inside the shroud(we did that with GM keys to allow remote start)? Would this work?
Conversely, I could get a key cur that works on the door lock and trunk lock and just keep the programmed key inside the car(locked in the glove box) which would solve my biggest problem (the fear that the dang thing falls off my key ring and then I am screwed)
I am sorry if this question has been posed many times but a search showed mostly questions about a spare remote or one of those remote/combo keys.
Money is a bit tight and i would rather spend that money on maintenance things for the car.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks in advance

My key recently broke in my 2001 s40 driver side door, The key does need to be re-programmed and there is no places that does older volvo keys, unfortunately I had to take it to the dealer. Damage was 94.26 for the key and 38.72 for the re-program labor was 70 bringing it to a whopping 215.26. They wanted 300 for a fob.
