2005 S40 Starting Issue
Hello all,
I have a 2005 Volvo S40 in which about a month ago it would not start properly. The starter will spin up then stop and start sporadically. It has progressively gotten worse. I took it to the shop and they replaced the starter to no luck. The only other two items I can think it would be are the ignition switch and the safety switch to make sure the car is in park or neutral. It does still do the same thing in neutral.
My question is this. I have the ignition switch out. Should that be the next thing I replace? If I do replace it is there something the dealership has to program?
Thanks for any help in advance.
Tim

Would you consider it a Start... Shudder.... Stall...??
If so, it's a known issue with the '04.5 and '05 S40's.

Thanks for the reply. This is not like a fuel problem. It is almost like a loose wire where the starter gets voltage on and off. If the starter will stay engaged the car cranks and runs fine. I hope this makes more sense. I am sorry for the poor explanation.
I replaced mine a couple weeks ago. It's fairly easy to get to but I ended up cutting some plastic parts behind the dash. First remove the kick panel under the steering wheel. This allows you to see up under the dash to the back of the switch. From here you can access the 2 wiring harnesses that plug into the back of the switch. You can also see the bottom screw holding the switch against the dash.
Next remove the plastic instrument cluster surround above the steering wheel. This allows you to get the top screw holding the switch in place. It's a blind screw though, you have to feel it with your fingers. And those plastic edges are sharp. I sliced both hands up numerous times.
Now here is where I had the most trouble. With the switch free there is not enough room to simply pull it out the bottom. Even after pulling and cussing and cajoling I could only manage to get it stuck sideways. There is one big piece of black plastic in the way. I simply grabbed my tin snips and cut it out. The bad part is that I removed the part where the kick panel connects to the dash in the upper right corner. The good part is I got the switch out and new one in. The kick panel is held by the remaining screws. My hands healed after a couple of weeks so I'm ready for the next issue....
