how long will it last? Thats a loaded question. Depends how you drive your car, how you take care of your car. So many factors come into play when askign that question.

Possible minor electrical issues, watch for Passenger Air bag off light. Is your a manual pass. seat?
Most CEL and other elec issues are now know and easily remedied.
I have seen several high mileage S40/V50 without any major suspension or mechanical defects.

65,000 to 85,000 with out need for any expensive repairs. I don't personally own a S40/V50.
I've just seen the odd mild electrical glitch.

Depends on your tolerance for minor problems. (as can be expected w/ any european car) In my first year w/ my 06' S40 (bought new w/ 23 miles on the ODO), I had it back to the dealer w/ 8 issues... air bag sensor, dead cd changer, electrical issues, a/c issues, two recalls, more... I would not have minded as much if my dealer had been more helpful. My S40 is now up for sale, so a year and a few months for me? If you have a good dealer, and don't mind an occasional loaner or two... you will stay in love. For me... combine a car w/ inop passenger air bags, two broken seat belts, and a less than helpful dealer and well... I'm done ;-)
