Hi everyone!!
Any luck replacing the battery for a '06 s40 outside the Volvo dealer and their $210 cost? I bought a car battery from a local store, it fits but the bracket that holds it down does not, it is made specifically for the VOLVO dealer battery, I bought a universal bracket, and that wont do either!! Has anyone had luck doing it on your own or am I stuck with the high dealer prices?
Any suggestions are appreciated!!!

 

Just went through the same ordeal, Exide L348-60 or L48-60 is the correct fit, not 48-60. If you can find another that cross references with that number, youre golden.

Car was a 2006 S40 2.4L 5 speed, hold down bracket would not fit other models.

 

thanks! I ended up going to an independent volvo shop and they did the job for $170!! Ill find out the battery model and Ill post it

 

I had a the same problem on my S40 2.4i 2005 Model. Unfortunately after the battery was fitted, it showed anti skid sevice and emmobilizer error when turned on. I had to take it to the dealer and it has cost me R889,00 to diagnose.

 

just replaced my battery from autozone. Same sizes, everything fit nice. $165.

 

 

Yes, I wouldn't expect more than 5-6 years out of a normal battery.

 

Yes. the dealer told me the same thing. That it is normal for the electronics to get confused when the battery is old. I got strange messages on mine as well.

 

I have read that replacing a battery can cause problems with the electronics. What is the proper procedure to avoid this, and can I do it without going to the dealer?

I have a 2006 S40 T5, and the battery seems to be on its last leg. Lately I have been getting a message that the passenger's air bag is inactive, and today the car would not start without a jump. There were multiple clicking sounds from the dash and the CD changer seemed to be attempting to load/unload CDs.

I was able to jump start it, but as the car is 5+ years old, I'm thinking the battery needs to be replaced.

the cover
the negative lead
Installation
the positive lead
the covers
the 2 nuts
the mounting bracket
the battery.

Install:

the 2 nuts. Tighten. See: Tightening torque

Note before disconnecting the battery lead

If the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights, read off the
diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for the engine management
system. If necessary, remedy any faults before cutting the power
to the vehicle.

When the ignition has been switched off, wait at least 1 minute
before cutting the power to the vehicle. This is so that there is
sufficient time for information to be stored in the control
modules.

Warning! The SRS (supplemental restraint system) is active for a
certain time after the power is cut. Therefore wait 3 minutes before
starting work.

If the vehicle has a heater with remote starting, the personal code
is reset to the factory default (1234) if the battery is disconnected
or the power is cut.

Caution! Always disconnect the battery negative lead.
Note before connecting the battery lead

Warning! The key must be in position 2. No one must be in the
vehicle when the battery is connected. This is a safety precaution in case an airbag module activates when the power is connected.

Central locking
Initialize the central locking and the courtesy lighting by unlocking
the vehicle using the remote control, the key or via VIDA vehicle
communication.

Engine
When the battery has been disconnected, the car may have to be
driven for a few minutes before the engine runs normally.

FWIW, my S40 owner manual states:

"Wait at least 5 minutes after switching off the ignition before disconnecting the battery so that all information in the vehicle's electrical system can be stored in the control modules."

I'm hoping this may store my radio's code somewhere, long enough to have the battery removed and tested. I will likely replace the battery, anyway, as its 5+ years old.

The S40 manual doesn't mention anything about putting the key in the #2 position or centralized locking. What is the purpose of locking the vehicle and turning on the courtesy light, and then unlocking it?

I installed the battery and didn't need the code for the radio.

Before I removed the batter, I checked with my Volvo dealer (Barrier Motors, Bellevue, WA) to see if they had a code for my radio. They weren't able to provide the code over the phone, but said they would do so at no charge if I brought the car in. I'm glad I didn't need to do this, but its nice to know the dealer would charge me for the code if I did need it.
