The S40 sound system is a pain to upgrade and it is good that you have the Premium system. It actually sounds pretty darn good once you tune the front and rear EQ's.
A sub can be added by tapping into the door speakers and run it to an amp with speaker level input and from the amp to a sub. Or you could get the OEM sub.
The system us tied together using fiber optics. This makes adding an amp difficult. You could get a device like the Rockford Fosgate 3sixty http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/produ...item_id=106187
connected to your speaker outputs and run amps off of that.
Speakers can always be replaced. They are riveted in but you can drill them out.

Anyone have any luck with a sound processor? Almost bought the rockford 3sixty today. but want to do a little more research. My problem is I have 2 very nice and not cheap amps from JL audio and a full JL speaker setup that is less than a year old. Love the car but i really want to kick the guy who thought of network radios!!!!

I had the same feeling before I bought my V50 and almost bought an '04 V40 instead. I had a nice Alpine system in my '02 S40 with MB Quart speakers that I would have loved to reuse. They are still sitting in a box in my basement waiting for something.
I have kept my V50 sound system stock but would love to install some sound deadening and upgrade the speakers. The mid-bass drivers seem decent but the tweeters are a bit unrefined. The amp seems decent especially for a factory unit. It had good damping factor and slew factor as it if fast and controls the cones very well. My Alpine system was faster though as I am sure your JL Audio is.
I have a chart somewhere that has the suppliers listed for various parts of the car. The head unit (if you can call it that) is made by Mitsubishi, the amps are Alpine and the speakers are Harman Industries (Infinity, JBL, Harman Kardon). I haven't dissected the door tweeters yet but the one in the center resembles the Infinity Poly cell. The mid-bass drivers have some type of polymer cones with rubber surrounds and are quite stiff. I believe in 2008 Volvo switched to Dynaudio in the premium system with a more powerful amp.
