Default 2006 S40: Temperature reading

Quick question.... Is there any problem when my temperature guage reads "*27"? Lately I've been getting a few off readings (I'm in South Florida, and I garentee you it is not 59 degrees during the day here) as well.

Thanks in advanced.

I have a 2006 S40 T5 AWD and have a similar problem with the temperature sensor giving an errornously low reading, usually when I first start the car. It might be 45 or 50 degrees out but the car is convinced it's 24 or something like that. Usually after 10 minutes or so of driving it, the reading increases to the correct ambient temperature. It doesn't happen all the time, but happens enough to be annoying. I think that I first started seeing the problem AFTER I took the car in for its 15000 mile service and also had a software update performed. Are these symptoms similar to your problem? Sorry I'm not of much help as far as an answer but maybe another post will catch someone's attention.

Well, the "*27" came on when I first started my car, I saw it, so I turned off the car, waited a minute, and re-started the car. It did not disapear. I drive 23 miles to class, and it was still on. A few hours later when I drove back home, it was back to normal (accurate). I am also writing right now having come back from work, and the whole drive home (another 23 mile journey), the car said it was 65 degrees, where it definitly was about 83-87 degrees.

I have not taken my car into service since my complimentary 7,500 mile check-up; I can not afford to pay the hefty prices of the 7500 interval check ups, where all you basically get is an oil change and a smack on the ***.

I've experienced the same problem for about a year now. (3 year old 2005 S40)

Last spring the dealer replaced a 'module'. This fall the problem came back. Dealer tells me now "It's a software issue. All we need to do is update the software, reset a few things and you'll be as good as new". They updated and reset but the problem still exists. My temp gauge usually starts with -40 or all blank.

My girlfriends S40 was taken to the dealership to have it looked at...they were 'unable to replicate it'...you might know.

Last posting on this was Jan '08? Wow! Yes, I'm having this issue as well. I'll be taking my '05 S40 T5 in for the 3rd time or so to have this problem looked at, too. If I ever get a clear answer on this I'll post here.

I had a 2006 t5 awd with the same problem. Took it to the dealer under warranty 4 times. They did the same runaround, software update, new module, and temp sensor. Finally they changed a wiring harness, somehow it was related to my door locks not operating correctly if I recall. This fixed the problem till I turned the car back in (end of lease). The dealer told me there is a service bulletin of some sort regarding this issue. It involved corrosion in the wiring harness. Unbelievable on a car under 2 years old at the time.

Corrosion in a wiring harness, eh? OK, I'll have the dealer check into that.

Default temp reading

Yep, I got the same problem started out fine today when i started it up and then just started dropping down it got to like 5 degrees and stopped there. Last time it happened I pulled of the negative side of the battery and it reset everything but it is doing it again. It gets really annoying because once it drops below 23 degrees it turns off the A/C.

Some newer S40's have a problem with the door harnesses. I think the 2006 models are the worst. Corrosion builds up in the connectors and causes weird problems like door lock issues, window problems, and the temp sensor (since the sensor is located in one of the side view mirrors). First step is to grease the connectors. If that doesn't work, the door harnesses must be replaced. There is a service bulletin on the issue, so go to your dealer.
