Default 3 issues with 2001 S49

Thank you in advance for any information. I was just given this car from my parents. It is very clean with only 90,000 miles on it.

1. AC/Heater fan is running at high all of the time

2. 12V plug is not working. I need to plug in my cell phone charger.

3. Turn signal sticks on when turning any right turn.

Can anyone help? I have a brother that is good at working on cars but does not have the codes for Volvos. He says they are different than other cars. I would sure appreciate saving money.

Again, Thanks.

The A/C-heater fan blowing high at all times is usually the blower motor resistor. If you like saving cash then replace the old transistor with a Radio Shack part. It's not as robust as the OEM unit but will last a year or two. Plus it's like $4.
Here is the resistor with attached electronics and heat sink. Last I checked it was about $100 from the dealer. It's located behind the glove box inside the ducting beside the cabin air filter. Check your filter while you are in there.

12v plug? Check your fuses first. Also check for coins inside the plug shorting it out. Last remove the center console and look for the wire being disconnected.

The turn signal is a new one for me. No help there as I've not had the column apart. If I understand you correctly the turn signal won't shut off after a right turn? That sounds like whats called a "cancelling cam" in other cars.

Wow, I can't believe what is going on now. I opened the sunroof for the first time last night (my parents had this car for about 5 years and never opened it up). I slid back the sun protecting piece first, then pushed the button. It opened and then closed just fine. This morning on the way to work, I heard this metal clunking-metal noise in the ceiling of the car. The sun protecting piece will not move backwards now. I am afraid to open up the sunroof itself. What do you suggest???? I really appreciate your help.

I'm thinking something just worked loose over the years. Stuff doesn't normally break from not being used but screws and bolts can work loose over time. Are you mechanically inclined? Probably need to start taking things apart to figure out what's wrong.

If you have a 32bit Windows Pro version (XP Pro or 7 Pro) you can get VIDA software with diagrams of all the cars systems and parts. Or maybe someone here can post an exploded view for you. I'm running a 64bit Home version here in China so I'm out.

Thanks Hudini. The transistor was bad on the blower motor resistor. We tested it after it was removed. Can you tell me which wire goes to which transistor leg? There is a black and a blue one. Also, when I turn the fan on say number 2 now, on ocassion it will speed up slightly then slow back down to the speed I had it on. Is this a concern or is it because I bought the 15A from RadioShack instead of installing the 30A part? I noticed online I can get the 30A. Do you recommend I order the 30A in case this one goes out? I sure appreciate all of your help!!!

Oh yeah, also the fuse was bad on the cigarette lighter. Someone put in a 15 instead of a 20. Luckily we had a 20, put it in and it worked.

The cabin filter was also replaced. It was horribly dirty; probably never replaced since it was new. Now I noticed the cabin does not have a stale, dirty smell. I am getting happy!

Now I just have to fix the sun roof, soe rattling in the engine area, and get the cup holder out and get another spring for it. How do I remove the cup holder?

I don't think it matters which leg is which. I would buy the heavy duty part if it's not expensive. The Radio Shack part I installed lasted a good 1.5 years before it failed.

My cup holder also failed. I went to a pull-a-part and grabbed the entire plastic enclosure that holds the cup holder and radio off a wrecked 2000 model. The cup holder itself is a self-contained unit that is supposed to snap in and out of the plastic enclosure. I could not get the old one out without damage so I gave up and replaced the whole unit.

Glad to hear you are making progress. It's very rewarding.

Any ideas about the 'surging' of the fan now? I can have it on 2 and the direction of the blowing at my feet and it will run at an even speed but suddenly 'speed' up for a second then go back down like it is quickly blowing out all of the air. It does not always do it but often it does. And it can do it for several repeats.

It's probably the resistor. The Radio Shack part is most likely the lightest duty one. Searching online I've found many of the same type non-polarity resistors.
