Alarm going off while driving
Hi All,
I have a 2003 Volvo s40 with 99k miles. Great car, love her. Today she threw a tantrum while I was driving - the alarm went off three times and I sounded like an ambulance driving around my town. Very embarrassing. Any ideas on what's going on? Nobody is going to steal this car where I live - anybody have a DIY solution for disabling this noise?
TIA,
Max

I am with you, but I have no yet tried to deal with any of it.
As these cars age out, you'd like to do as much as you can to make the anti-theft hard to trigger, right? Or, in an even stupider situation, disable the horn so that it can go off in whatever flaky way that you can't fix.
The way the door locks work, I don't know that you ever can fool things in that system without creating some other problem. I have not yet started to figure that out. One thing I have figured out is that the hood latch contacts could be bypassed and you'd never miss that. It's isolated from every other decision. Plus it's easy to get to. I don't really know why the anti-theft would be armed while driving at all, but maybe it arms when the doors lock. Do your doors auto-lock at speed?
I feel ilke this is an area where people committed to a long term keeper might have to really invest some effort.

Agreed, the anti-theft should be damn near bullet-proof. Nothing yet with the horn, thankfully. My doors don't lock at speed.
I'll try the hood latch bypass. I'm no expert - if you have instructions or a thread handy, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'll re-attach the battery afterwards and cross my fingers that she behaves herself.
Thanks FireBirdParts!
