Buying a used Volvo S40
I am looking into buying a used Volvo. Currently I am driving my fathers 1994 Volvo 960 while I wait to hear from the insurance company about my car. More than likely I will have to buy another car. While researching, I found a 2000 Volvo s40 for $2,888. I am brand new to the whole purchasing a car deal. The ad says that the turbo has been replaced but it still needs a turbo hose. Do I absolutely need that hose for the car to drive efficiently? Is replacing the Turbo like replacing the engine? (I have been told to run if an engine has been replaced). What are the best questions to ask the seller about the car before I even think about purchasing it? (other than Carfax). Thanks!
Turbochargers do get replaced if the bearing has seized up due to poor engine oil management, blocked oil passage (very rare) or lack of cooling if it is water-cooled.
You may not have to get the hose for the turbocharger, but you would have to plug the existing holes and the ECU may get confused. I would get the hose and have the turbo going (turbocharged Volvos are pleasant beasts).
You can ask as to why the turbocharger needed replacing. Also, make sure to do a walk-around check for signs of fluid leak, traces of accidents, etc... If possible, take the car to a reputable shop and have them run a pre-purchase inspection. Test driving can reveal a lot about the car.
Good luck,
JPN

I would say run away. The 2000 model has some "one year only" parts that may be hard to find later plus some early 2000's had paint issues. Also for $2,800 it should be in better shape. JMHO.
