Can anyone help! My 1998 S40 T4's not starting - I've seen some similar posts about this but don't know if anyone resolved their problems. A few days ago I got the starter motor changed 'cos if I left the car for a few minutes and came back to it, it wouldn't start, but since then the car has only started twice!
I've tried to use jump leads which didn't work, I've replaced the battery & even charged it to be on the safe side. In the end I bump started it which worked instantly.
I don't think it's the battery because it doesn't make the same clicking noise when you try to start it, also all the interior & exterior lights work fine. The indicator light on the battery is bright green which shows it's charged.
Could there be a loose wire somewhere?

 

Am I right to assume it is a manual transmission car?
If so maybe the switch on the clutch pedal is bad. The switch might not be telling the computer the clutch is pressed down.

 

Yes! It's a 5 speed manual, but we tried cranking it in neutral, several times while charging from another car & then after charging the battery all night!
We bump started it with 2 people pushing it last night, popped the clutch and it fired straight up! this after trying to start it of jump leads! but when we got home & tried to start it, it just went click! everything else works interior, exterior lights, central locking, security light.
Try it again this morning after charging all night & just click!
Battery's about 2months old AC Delco & starter was replaced on Monday.

 

Maybe the new starter is bad.

 

Sorry forgot to mention that the car usually start's without the clutch being depressed.

Thanks that's kinda what we were thinking! But the guy at the garage who installed it says he always buys the same brand & hasn't had a problem with them, but there's always a first time.
