clunking in the front right side

have you inspected your front suspension with the wheel on (does the wheel itself have any play) and off? Any oil leaking from the top of the strut? Is the spring intact (broken springs are common to Gen1 S40s - not sure about Gen2s)? Clunking could be the strut mount, a sway bar end link or bushings or even a motor mount/torque rod. wheel vibrations could be struts, broken suspension component, tire/lug nuts.

yes a bad motor or transmission mounts can present similar to suspension issues, particularly when power is applied or removed. If you get thumping going over a speed bump or say RR tracks, then I'd suspect the strut mount may have broken. I just replaced one on my 850 - torn right in the center. I could press on the spring and see the strut top nut move... Does the noise or feel change while coasting in neutral through a corner or over a bump?
