In desperate need of help!
Hey everyone im a new guy to the Volvo area. Usually it's VW's & Mustangs for me. My wife got a new XC60 & I liked it so much I found a 01' S40 (Both American spec).
Well... On my way back from Italy my check engine light came on.
1. I starts every 2-3rd time you turn the key. It acts like a dead battery, but when it catches it starts and runs good.
2. If I need to accelerate to pass a car it sounds like it has an aftermaket blow off valve.
3. Occasionally you will get a bad odor that lasts for a few seconds. I roll down the wondows for a second and it dissapears. I think this is probably the cat doing this.
I scanned it and got these codes. P0236, P0108, P0420 I took it to the dealership and they told me it would cost 2000 Euros for a new turbo because there is a stuck valve in the turbo. I have searched the internet high & low for a new turbo. I have use the search engine on here about 1000 times and no luck. I even used the resouces thread on here, but the web sites never say for a 2001, Volvo S40, we sell a new turbo... The cost is X... So here is my question.
Where can I buy a new turbo for my car? If there is a small upgraded (this is my daily driver) turbo/software i'd be game for that. I see turbo's for sale for like 500-700 Dollars. But I have no idea which one to buy, will it need modifications to fit etc.. Thanks guys, I have to get this fixed quick. My wife works for a high school and im a mid worker. So carpooling is not an option.

Okay, I think I found a place. I just want to know before I call this guy and order from him. Have any of you heard of volvopartsearch.com? It says he is known as "The Volvo Guy". Please let me know if anyone has had dealings with this company before.
Just so you guys know, this repair won't scare me away from my car. I've done more than my share of repairing/rebuilding cars and I really like this one.

You show 3 codes; MAS, turbo and catalyst efficiency. It could be a BOV stuck open (based on #2). I would be tempted to clear the codes and see if the same 3 show up again.
The volvo dealer sites only show one turbo for a 01 1.9T and they all show cost around $845 (US).
Never dealt with volvopartsearch but $300 sounds like a rebuilt/used turbo (to me anyway)
I don't know about a small upgrade; upgrade to a 14T then upgraded exhaust then larger injectors and remap the ECU......

American Spec right?
If you need to replace the turbo it is a 12T turbo. You should not pay more than $300 for it.

That's it brand new, but they can be had cheaper used or reconditioned.
You can clean the MAF (MAS) and see if that helps: How to link in this thread: https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-s40-11/frequently-asked-questions-34712/

Thanks alot guys I really appreciate it. The search is still on for my part though. The above site wanted $726 for a rebuilt one. I have tried calling a bunch of places but no-one answers the phone. ggggrrrrrr.... How to these people run a business without answering the phone!! Okay, im done crying. Back to the search.
