Default Help! I'm DESPERATE!

I have a 1982 240/245 DIESEL wagon. Her name is Zippy, and we love this little car. Unfortunately, we have a problem. She's broken the #3 fuel line. We've moved heaven and earth to find one and we've been told that there ARE none. Now, I don't really believe that. There's got to be a useable one *somewhere*. Is there someone out there who has one of these gems in the back lot, or a cache of parts from one parted out? We have cash, we just don't have the part! We can't afford to replace the car- I'm not well and it's not happening. And to make matters worse, my daughter is getting married at the end of the month and I really need the car for ferrying people and things back and forth. Naturally Zippy could smell this coming and decided this would be a good time for a vacation...

Please, if you have one or know where I can get one, let me know! I'm in Portland, OR, and I'm happy to pay shipping. This is a bit of an emergency. Drop me a line here and I'll email or call you or whatever.

Thank you!

What kind of fuel line? Local hydraulic shop should be able to make one for you.

It's a diesel engine, 6cyl. There are 6 fuel lines- little skinny guys about as big around as straws, but in weird bendy, squiggly shapes, each different depending on which cylinder it's going to. We've already talked to someone who fabricates this sort of line, and they can't do it. And given the pressure the fuel lines are under in this engine, it is not safe to try to do it ourselves.

Maybe talk to DFIS. I know this company because they're the go-to guys for Bosch diesel injection pumps. If anyone knows where you can get this line fabricated, they will. They're in Portland too. How about that!

Just log on to turbobricks.com and place an ad in the wanted section of the classified. There are many masochists there still flogging D24's.

Default Vw?

The lines are all the same length just bent to fit. I do not know the length of the d24 lines, but they may be the same as lines for rabbit jetta quantum dasher vw's and also check audi 5 cyl diesel. d24 engine is a vw engine. The lines have to be the same length to work, though. Seems likely to me they would be. Can measure lines with string or tape for comparison.

AFAIK, the D24 was used in VW small commercial trucks, not in any cars. the rabbit/jetta diesels are 4-cyl, audis are 5s. the D24 is a inline 6.

any diesel truck injection specialty shop should be able to bend a custom pipe to fit, and flare the ends appropriately.

The d24 shares internals with the 1.6vw and the 2.0 audi diesels, It is essentially the same engine with extra cylinders. Indirect injection lines are all of the same length, so it is quite possible that the lines would work between them if the bends were duplicated.

I'm suspecting the lines have to be a little longer for the 6-cyl

I have a Merc 240d, the lines on that car are all the same length. I believe that the line length is the same through all cylinders to assure that the pressure builds to the injector at the same interval for all. There would be no reason for bends in the piping otherwise. The OP has a broken #3 line. I would think the #3 would be the same in that cylinders 5 and 6 would be rearward of the pump and the pump would almost certainly be mounted at the same relative position for all as it is a mechanically driven pump. But then, I have been known to produce some pretty theories

what I meant was, to reach the #1 and #6 from the centralized fuel distributor thing, those lines would likely need to be a bit longer than #1 and 4 on a 4 cyl.... sure, all the lines on the respective engines could be the same size, but I'm hypothesising the ones for the 6 are longer than the ones for the 4.

FWIW, my out-of-date volvo parts catalog lists the fuel lines for a 1986 740 Diesel as...

1257149 Fuel pipe cylinder 1
1257150 Fuel pipe cylinder 2
1257151 Fuel pipe cylinder 3
1257152 Fuel pipe cylinder 4
1257153 Fuel pipe cylinder 5
1328502 Fuel pipe cylinder 6

Well, I don't know about the length, but they are all different shapes, no two alike. They remind me a lot of the plumbing lines in our basement- weird squiggles for having to go around the heater or the ductwork and such...

The box of lines finally came back from the outfit back east, so Friday afternoon I walked into DFIS with them and put on my saddest Bambi eyes. They had me a new line hand bent in about 20 minutes. For $45. I was shocked. If I ever break one of these damn things again, guess where I'm going!

The other lines we ordered through the dealer. Another week or two and they should be in, then it remains to get time with my mechanic. I may not have Zippy home before the wedding, but it looks like she'll be home soon!

And thanks for your suggestions, everyone! It's nice to know there's a 'hive mind' to ask questions of!

Glad you were able to find your line! I lived in Portland for several years and had excellent service at Alamo Automotive on Glisan St. Mitch and Dennis are superb and resourceful mechanics and although busy, always fit me in in an emergency. At the risk of sounding like a shill, you could be a AAA membership away from having Zippy rolling for the wedding. (No offense to you or your present shop).

Well, I'm not "everyone," but I'll take what I can get in the way of thanks as DFIS was my suggestion.

You're ahead of most newbies. At least you came back with a resolution. Most newbies just take the information and disappear. This is becoming such a regular occurrence that my future response to desperate newbies is going to be "I have the information you need but I'm not going to tell you."
