Default Do I need this fixed? "HAD Code for CAM Position Acuator"

An engine light came on around the 100k mark on my 2003 Volvo S40, and so I went to the local mom&pop Volvo mechanic for a diagnostic and they said that I needed a "HAD Code for CAM Position Acuator".

I've put off the fix and have since driven 20k and haven't noticed any problems. What does the above fix do, and do I absolutely need it?

The mechanic quoted it at $244 for parts and $396 for labor, with tax that totals about $650. Is it worth the investment, and do you think I can get it for cheaper? That's alot of money for a poor college kid like myself but I do want to keep my Volvo running for years to come.

I don't really know anything about cars, so any insight is appreciated!

I assume they mean the camshaft reset valve and if so, that labor quote is way out of line.

It could be low or dirty oil, or the reset valve or the CVVT hub.

At this website it's known as the "CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER CVV SOLENOID" for 2000-2004 S40 Volvo and brand new is $149 plus $30 core charge and shipping. You will need the gasket listed too. Replacement time is less than an hour going very slow.

I believe Tasca has it for less:

Thanks guys for the advice! I'll shop around and see if I can get it for cheaper, especially if I can buy the part myself online.
