Default Driver door seat belt stuck

I have searched here some but....

I have a 2000 S40 and the driver door seat belt will not release. It was jammed open and I took the covers off and used compressed air to blow out all of the dust and got it to retract - now it won't release to extend the belt back out. I saw a write up about pulling the seat mount bolt and let it retract all the way in - now it is just stuck all the way up. I can release a little at a time with numerous slight tugs but I am getting no where fast.

Time for a new assembly?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tucker

Take the wiper arm off and use a vise to slightly bend the wiper arm. I leave the Jaws loose and set the arm in there and press on it like you are going towards the windshield. But be careful so you do not break it.

Thanks (again). Have tweaked it before but ended up with the arm hitting hood when it was open. I will work on tweaking it some more some since I am going to be waiting on a seat belt mechanism to be delivered now....

Appreciate your help

FYI: Volvo said that there were 3 manufacturers of the seat belt assembly for the 2000. You need the seat belt tag number (located on the seat's bolt, under the cap) as well as the VIN, to order the correct part (no returns if the incorrect assembly is ordered).

Of course after installing it, the SRS light is now on. Volvo said that it "just" needs to be re-set.

Default Volvo Driver seatbelt temporary fix with dental floss, and final replacement

YouTube video here:

Volvo Driver seatbelt temporary fix with dental floss, and final replacement - YouTube

On Saturday, the driver's seatbelt on our 1996 Volvo 850 would not extend and would only retract, i.e. get tighter. After a nerve-wracking drive home without a seatbelt, I took it apart and rigged a temporary fix with dental floss to get us through the weekend.

AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, THE TEMPORARY FIX DID NOT INHIBIT SAFE AND PROPER RESTRAINT OPERATION OF THE SEATBELT, BUT I CANNOT SUBSTANTIATE, AND DO NOT GUARANTEE, ANY SUCH CLAIM. IT JUST GOT US THROUGH THE WEEKEND.

The dental floss made manual the ability to extend or release the belt under normal driving conditions, which operation is normally automatic. It was annoying because as you drove, the belt would only get tighter and would not release without a gentle pull on the floss, which was needed to look around at intersections, while backing, and such. A piece of soft foam between the belt and collar bone would have been a welcome improvement.

On Monday I got a used replacement from Ithaca Foreign Car Service (Thanks, Dave et al.!) and replaced the bad unit.

This video shows the replacement, the inertial device which seemed okay but was apparently no longer doing its job, then some details of the temporary fix with the floss.

I did forget to to video the feeding of the seatbelt through the side door post plastic panel. Also, posts in some fora state that a SRS error will be generated if the battery is not disconnected during this operation.
