Error codes and overboosting, Volvo S40
Hello Everyone,
I've been having some codes come up in my car that are kind of odd in my 2001 s40. I'm getting P0101 for the MAF eventhough i just replaced it with a brand new one. Also getting P0172 for system too rich ( not quite sure what that means) and P0234 engine overboost condition (again, not too sure what that means). I've read a few threads online about similar problems and have a couple theories.
i'm thinking it could be a timing belt issue, a vacuum leak, or map sensor malfunction.
Very interested in your thoughts.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
What motor do you have in the car?
A MAF code could be thrown due to a bad vacuum line connection.
It sounds like you have a loose vacuum line coming off your turbo control valve. Check and replace any bad vacuum lines going to and near the turbo.

thanks for the advice. do you know a good way to check for vacuum leaks? i have hear of people using carburetor cleaner for spray around the connections, but its pretty flammable so i'm not too keen on it. any other methods?
Another flammable method is using an unlit propane torch with the gas turned on very low. A vacuum leak will suck in the gas an increase the idle speed.
The professional mechanic uses smoke pumped into the system and a light. Not sure how the home mechanic could duplicate this.
