Default A few quick questions from a new owner

Hi,
I bought my '02 S40 1.9T a few weeks ago. It's been running fine except some mornings hard to start at first try issue which I found a few ideas where to look in here (FPR, etc.).

Last night I was going to my friends, it started fine, then I stopped by at a gas station to buy something to drink. After I came back to car it didn't start. It was hardly turning the engine and dashboard lights were dim. So I called AAA and it started right up with jumper. I got nervous so I drove home to pickup my portable jumper battery, I left the car running with headlights off and when I got back to car and turned on the headlights, it died again. I connected my portable jumper and it took a few long hard tries to start.

I had the car for 4 weeks and never had this issue, when the car died by itself made me very nervous now. I'm going to call AAA and have them test the battery and charger.

My concern is since when I bought the car, the A/C has been acting weird. The flow of the air changes by itself, it blows faster or slower randomly every a few seconds. That makes me worry if there is a different electrical problem with the car.

My last question is how many miles I should be getting with a tank of gas. I get around 220-250 miles per tank, is this normal with these cars?

Thanks in advance.

If that battery is still the original one then it had a good run its time to replace it.
For the A/C problem you have there is a solution.Try this first.Dont turn the **** all the way to cool but like two click back.On mine this is all I do with the same problem. Now if the problem still exist at that point then here is a how-to to fix it.

The millage you can do with a tank does varies but that 200-250 seems OK for city driving. On HGW you should go 400miles on a tank.My lovest and highest was 12mpg-34mpg depending on the road and mostly on the weight of my foot. The fuel capacity is 16gal but the gauge on red and the light on you still have 5gal in there. There is another 60miles in there but after even the computer says you can go 0miles you have no way of tracking the fuel level anymore so not worth risking it.

Thank you for your reply. I took it to the Sears and they tested the battery, it was showing less than 1V so I've got a new one. It seems to be ok now.

I've seen that fix link, it looks easy enough. It's not bothering me much but it's good to know what's wrong with it. I'm going to try your suggestion as well.

The mileage seemed little low but it matches your numbers. I've got around 350 miles when I drove to LA and back last month.

Do you guys test for any air intake leaks? My previous car was a Dodge Stealth twin turbo and any air leak caused it to run lean, due to computer's air/fuel mix miscalculation. This is 1.9T so I'm guessing I have a turbo somewhere in the engine, am I right?

Yes you have a turbo at the back of the engine. There is no need to check for leaks this car is so sensitive for vacuum leaks that you will notice it as the idle will go all over the place.
