I accidentally bumped the flasher button on my 2002 Volvo s40 and the flashers (hazard lights) came on. I tried to press the button back in but it will not stay in.

I made a temporary fix by tearing a piece off a brown paper bag and folding it many times and jamming it under the button to hold it in. I do not consider this a permanent fix.

Is there a way to easily take this button off and fix whatever is malfunctioning? Most of the time when this happened in the past, I just messed about with it and it finally stayed in and the flashers were turned off. I was not so lucky this time. It seems that it could be replaced if I just knew what to do.

Anyway, can I fix, it? Can I just just take the panel off the dash and repair that way. The biggest issue I can see is that even with the ignition off and the key is out, the flashers still operate.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a relatively simple matter of just replacing a bad emergency flasher switch. You just use a flat trim tool (or butter knife) and gently pry up the bottom of the vent section (you'll hear the clips release). Once the bottom is free, do the same with the top, and pull the vent assembly out. Unplug the bad emergency flasher switch, clip in a new one, push the plug back on and push the vents into the dash.

Done!

Just take your time, and don't pry hard enough to damage the (soft) dash. You might have to work one lower corner off a little, then move to the other lower corner. But all in all, a really quick, easy, cheap fix.
