Default Front-end rattle?

Hi Guys,

My S40 has a knocking (not a rattle - I'd call droplinks a rattle) coming from the driver's (Left) side front suspension area. I've replaced the droplinks and control arms, but I'm beginning to think it might be the anti-roll/sway bar bushing. It clunks over bumps and when I rock the steering wheel. Nothing on either opposite lock, so not CV joints.

Steering is sharp as a tack, so it's not the rack going south....
I feel awfully idiotic for not checking the bushings when I was under there last week!

Liam

Check the anti-roll bar where it bolts down under the rubber/aluminum bushing just as it goes under the body. You may be able to see it without removing the front wheel by turning the wheel all the way right. On mine the aluminum part broke allowing the anti-roll bar to lift and fall over bumps causing the knocking sound. Eventually both sides broke. And with big hands it's a PITA to get to the one 10mm bolt.

Hudini,

Thanks! I'll be going on the lift again on Sunday morning, so I'll be sure to have a gander. It's not the topmount, not the arms... . At least it'll've had a quasi front-end rebuild!

Lol, ok. The strut mount and bushing is also a known failure point. Mine sounded like something loose behind the glove box inside the dash. The noise was up high though, not like the anti-roll bar bushing where the noise was down by my feet.

Hudini,

I'm feeling it through my feet when braking, so I'm guessing it's more toward the lower end?

That would be my guess. Something down low. You also have 2 motor mounts down low on the center metal bar (the bar with the skid pad on it). Mine only made the car vibrate more not any clunking sounds IIRC.
