how many litres to buy for transmission fluid change
not doing a flush but,,,draining transmission fluid and adding the same amount.....
possibly drain into empty windshield jug and add same...how many litres should i buy of transmission fluid for the change
thanks
for 2002 volvo s40 1.9 litre engine automatic
ok capacity is 7.6 litres...
so not doing a flush..not sure how much sits in the pan
so im guessing 6 litres to be safe

when you drain via the plug, as I recall you should expect to get 60% of the fluid give or take, so 6L should be just about right (considering if you drain 5L you want an extra container to top off. Just make sure you use a JWS3309 spec transmission fluid (refer to the owners manual to confirm)
thanks
i noticed at our local auto store
https://www.napacanada.com/en/search...=nol-veh-conds
has 3 ...the spec you mentioned more expensive
could i use the others,,even though it mentions on there car calculator,,it s for my car

Here's the interesting thing - your Volvo has an Aisin transmission so it has more in common with a Toyota (which also uses Aisin) than a BMW. Toyota OEM transmission fluid is typically 3309 compliant so look to see what they'd sell you for a Toyota :-) Just go to Amazon and put in JWS3309 to see what products come back.

I always used 3309-spec for my Volvos (a 2001 V70 and a 2005 V50). Make sure and get the right spec fluid - transmissions really don't like being fed the wrong type.
On the V50, it would always drain the same amount (IIRC, 4 liters, but don't trust that number and look it up). I'd be very close just putting that many quarts in it. Normally, I'd just use the dipstick to check it, but the genius engineers at Volvo decided to put it where it was virtually impossible to get to unless you were under the car (meaning it was no longer level for proper checking). Another safe rule of thumb is to just measure how much you take out, and put that much back in. I do that by pouring one new quart in (after draining, of course), and filling that bottle and emptying it, and then pouring that much back in. Easy peasy.

the web site doesn't show very much info on the product. check out this page from a Volvo friendly site discussing the Aisin product.

well, if you drain and only get 3-4L from the pan, then you will have 50% fresh ATF. A common practice is to drain from the pan, refill and run the car for a bit then drain again. After 2-3 fills you will be up to 75% fresh and that should be good for another 50-100K miles. My thought would be to buy the extra and be on the safe side. Do your first drain/fill, run the car for a bit then check the color and level. If the color is still brown, consider a second drain/fill.
Yes, what mt6127 said. Buy a case (12 quarts) and do a few drain-and-fills. Worst case, you end up with a few quarts left over for the future (and probably saved enough money that the "extra quarts" will be free anyway).
so just drained and refill...4 litres came out and added 4 litres,,,have not start the car yet..dipstick is red ...but seems way over the fill line...
should i start car ..and maybe it will go to normal on dipstick of transmission..or drain a bit til dipstick is normal
thanks
update
my bad
right now i just put the old transmission fluid which i drained into a bucket and now i just put all that transmission fluid into the empty 1 litre transmission fluid i just bought....i see it only used 3 ...and i defenitely put 4 in the transmission..so my bad i think i put 1 litre to much...
time to drain 1 litre out of transmision

best to research the correct method to measure tranny fluid levels (ie google or Youtube) - in short there's two marks on the dipstick for cold and hot. when you start you should fill to the cold line then there's a prescribed driving cycle to warm the transmission. you then can recheck to the hot level on the dipstick to make sure you are spot on.
The problem is that it's impossible to get to the dipstick where it's mounted, at least on my V50. I can get to it from underneath, but unless I've just driven the Volvo around and then lifted it using a shop lift - or at least jacked all four corners up the same amount (hah!) it's not going to provide a good reading. I believe that the tranny will drain right around four quarts if it starts at the right level, so you're going to be good pouring four quarts in after a "normal" drain. If you get much less than that out, it may have been low.
I remember Tony (a very experienced Volvo tech who used to frequent this forum) used to say he never checked the fluid, but always poured in four quarts after a drain. That's what I always did, and it always worked fine and seemed to put the fluid at the right point on the dipstick - as near as I could tell, given the design).
