Default Key ring remote appears to not be working

My key ring activator does not operate my door locks. I can press it and nothing happens - no door is locked or unlocked.

Yesterday, I was in Autozone and noticed they had installed some kind of tester that allows one to test the key ring device to see if it is working.

I checked mine and it is not working. The easiest things are checked first so I am going to check the battery in the key ring. I checked it a month ago on a battery tester and it was fine.

My question how does this CR2032 battery install in the key ring. It can only go in one of two ways.

There also could be a fault in the key ring itself so if I put in a new battery and try it and it does not work then I will know it is the key ring.

Does one need to activate the key ring when the car has been out of use for a while? If so how does one activate the key ring?

I have a Volvo s40 2002 made for North American use.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

I can awer the battery orientation part. The battery on my 2003 S40 key goes in + side up. The battery cover on mine has a + sign molded into the under side also.

My key is falling apart too. I wish they sold decently priced replacements, even if it were just the plastic bodies like autozone sells for my Ford, the ones that you just tranfer the guts into.

If you are talking about the actual ignition key, no such luck, they are expensive, but I just epoxied the heck out if it with couple consecutive coats and it worked on both of my S40s.

Default How do I activate the key ring?

Okay, I do not believe that that my key ring needs replacing just that it now needs activation so I can again use it on my 2002 Volvo s40.

How do I do that?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You cannot program it on your own. If it was working before and now is not, it will need to be replaced. Replacing the battery does not cause it to lose programming.
