Default Known issues on a '01 S40 AWD

Below is a car I am looking into on CL. I am unfamiliar with Volvo, but they seem to be a lasting car if well maintained and I like the safety aspect since this will be driven by my son and wife. At 85K miles, that doesn't seem too bad, but I don't want a big maintenance headache. Feel free to post a link on known issues or anything that would be a good read on Volvo. Never owned one. I am currently driving an Audi A4 AWD that I really like and have had no issues. This Volvo seems like a competitor to the Audi. Does the S40 get the best fuel economy of all the Volvo models? I want a small motor with normal power, good economy and safe to drive.

Thanks for any help.

The biggest issue with the 2001 S40 AWD is that they did not make one. They were all FWD. The AWD S40 did not come out until the next generation (2005).

The seller must be mistaken or it is a finger fumble.

Thank you for that. I have moved my thinking to an '05 FWD car. Not sure if the next generation is any better, but I may have found a deal on one.

The newer generation started with the 2004.5 model. After my '02 S40 got totaled, I bought the '05 V50 T5 FWD auto. In my opinion it is a definite improvement in every aspect. I will say that the 2004.5 - 2005 had some growing pains being a new design. Most of the issues were fixed with software updates, some with hardware recalls. By now they should have been taken care of.

The only down side I see to the car is that you are very limited when it comes to audio upgrades. If you are into quality sound, look for one with the Premium Sound system. Even without the sub it is very good. However, Volvo did not give the stereo an aux/ipod input until mid-2007. For $500 there is a device by Denson that will add the inputs to the earlier models but you have to have the Premium Sound systems CD changer.

Thanks for the tips. $500 is a big number just for an Ipod. Wow. I can live with the CD player for that kind of money. Seeing the car tonight. Hope it works out to be my first Volvo journey.
