leaking fluid

I have fluid leaking from the red cap under the front drivers side of my Volvo S40. does anyone know what this fluid is?

I don't recognize that thing (my 2005 V50 didn't have one). If the fluid is green(ish) and watery, it's coolant. If it's oily and smelly (and somewhere between red and black), it's transmission fluid.

I think that the undertray screws fit in there so probably engine coolant from the radiator or the hose connection
I see that the undertray is missing
