While ago I noted dark brown fluid on top of transmission, see my post -https://volvoforums.com/m_83407/tm.htm.

At the time I thought it was engine oil. Recently I noted Rack-and-pinion becoming noisy -last week I brought XC90 for 30K service, and told them about steering noise-I was told, that "teck topped-off the PS fluid, and it fixed the problem".

When I asked if they found any leaks, I was told "No, but they tightened up all the connections"..

I wonder if this dark fluid on top of trannyis PS fluid, and where it is coming from?

Any one knows?

PS is not usually dark. I would inspect other areas above or near this fluid for another cause.

 

Many modern cars seem to use ATF for PWS. They are usually clear red but check with you owner's manual to see what fluid is required.
